Show Summary


‘The Soup’ is a comedy show, with a very different concept. ‘The Soup’ premiered on July 1, 2004 and is currently running into its fifth season. The Soup airs on E! and its different concept and a different perspective towards things is one of the main reasons for the success of the show.

The show’s basic concept remains unvarying where the host of the show Joel McHale focuses on themes such as reality television shows or shows on E!. McHale then shows and introduces each clip, to the live audiences which is then played on a screen. He then comments and pokes fun at each of the clip before moving onto the next one. Besides just focusing on television and reality TV, making fun of pop culture and television is also an integral part of the show.

The basic concept of ‘The Soup’ is basically taken from a very popular ’90s show ‘Talk Soup’, with a few changes here and there. When the show just began the show’s tentative name was “What The…? Awards,” but the name was soon changed to ‘The Soup’ in order to bring a close remembrance to ‘Talk Soup’.

The live audience that is shown on the show generally comprises of a small group of E! employees, their families and friends, along with the typical production personnel. This audience plays a very vital role in the series by laughing and cheering along with the clips.

Besides, Joel McHale other characters who are regulars on the show are Mankini. Mankini is a man who appears on the show wearing a bikini. Then we have dancing maxipad, two nerds who dress as characters from Star Wars, an intern named Matt who McHale shoots with a gun, and a cat eating spaghetti from ‘The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet’.

The show is divided into various segments. The first segment is “Chat Stew” which features clips from various talk shows. Then we have “Chicks, Man”, which focuses on female celebrity news. The third segment is “Reality Show Clip Time!” where clips from various reality shows are played. The next segment on the show is “Let’s Take Some E!” This segment features clips from E! shows. The Last segment on the show is “Clip of the Week”. In this segment ‘The Soup‘ staff chooses one best clip shown on TV over the past week.
